The Discovery 2

The Second Gen Discovery - Hated by many, beloved by others and known as the Discovery 2, Disco 2 or D2.

Anyone that has owned of these machines has probably at one point experienced some or many of the wonderment that comes along with ownership.  Whether it be a blown head-gasket or some other issue with the cooling system.  Maybe the 3 Amigos.  Perhaps you woke up one day to some ticking that wasn't there before or better yet, your front drive shaft exploded and put a hole in the side of your transmission.

We won't touch on everything, the list is probably much larger, but this highlights some of the typical issues an owner of a Discovery 2 might enjoy during ownership.

Recently we had the opportunity to meet with the owner of another Independent Land Rover shop in Los Angelas.  He's been at this game for 40+ years.  At one point he had developed software to reprogram some of the early Land Rover ECU's.

Their shop was full of Land Rover engines.  I asked what they were doing with all of them, he said they pull out the crappy motors in the later Discovery 2 trucks and replace them with rebuilt 4.6L engines from the early Range Rover P38 models.  This is something we've never heard of doing.  But if you find something that works well there is no reason to stop doing it.  We picked up an extremely low mile Discovery 2 from them with one of these transplants.  So far so good.
